Is it wrong to want that new car?

Okay, DH is on the job hunt again. He's interviewing for a job he would actually like to have today and I would love for him to get it. I am praying that this works out for many reasons but most of all because I want DH to be happy. I know he's not happy where he is now and if he will be here then I am all for it.

Now, on for the selfish part. I want him to get this job so I can trade in my car for something I actually want. I know that may sound funny but every car I have ever had I have either been given or I have had to buy NOW because of my previous car dying. I don't have the best of luck with vehicles to say the least. :-D

My first car that I got for Christmas 1995 was a 1987 Nissan Sentra hatch back. It was only $600 and drove so it worked for me! The only thing that was funny about it was the it had the "F" word keyed into the passenger door but you had to be looking in just the right light and at just the right angle to see that so no biggie to me. I loved my car because I was about to turn 16 and get my license so it meant freedom. It lasted 2 years before it died. Now, believe me when I say it had many problems in two years but my dad got his money's worth on that one.

So my car died, I was barely 18 (maybe 2 weeks past my 18th b-day) and I needed a car. Luckily my future MIL works at a car dealership. I went and picked out a car in a day and got a good deal. Don't get me wrong, I ended up loving the car, but I probably would have gotten something different had I actually had time to shop around. That and being that I was 18 with no credit to get the loan I had a 22% interest rate. That may sound like a joke but I am completely serious in every way. This car lasted barely 10 months by no fault of it's own. My poor car was totaled when an idiot ran a red light and I t-boned him.

This took me to my third car which actually was DH's car. We decided that I would drive it and he would buy a truck instead. This was November 1998 and the car was a 1989 Honda Prelude. It was actually a really good car but it wasn't MY car, if that makes any sense. I know that may sound funny but it always felt like DH's car that I was driving. I hadn't helped pick it out, I had nothing to do with it, and I always just felt like I was borrowing his vehicle.

Of course then in May 2001 it died. I mean transmission kaput, would cost $1600 to fix, absolutely died (and of course this was on the way to work one morning - lol). There was no way that was going to happen and we NEEDED a car so we went to the dealership again. This time we did get a newer car - a 2000 Ford Focus with a warranty. I liked the car okay but we bought it in a day. It was the only dealership we went to and we had to have a car so we got that one. It is darn close to a base model and when I say that I mean power nothing. It runs good but it feels like a consolation car. I would love a car with power windows and power locks, where I didn't have to worry about getting the door open in the parking lot at 8:00 at night.

That brings me to now. If DH gets this job we could really afford to trade the Focus in for something I really want. I would love to have an SUV and the Jeep Liberty's have really caught my eye. We live in Indiana so we do get snow and ice and the call of a 4-wheel drive is another huge bonus. We can lease a Liberty (or another mid-size SUV) for just a little more a month than our car payment and for us that would be totally worth it. We have become the kind of people that need a warranty and need to know that if something does go wrong with our vehicle that we can get it fixed and have a rental car while it's being fixed. That may sound awful but that's just the way it is.

So I pray that DH's interview goes well and that if he will be happy at this job that he will get it. And of course if that gives me the benefit of a fun new vehicle then I will be very happy for that too.

Soooo, any update on this new job? Really hoping for you two :). Is your MIL still in the car dealership business? If you're not going through someone you know, please be very careful of leasing, they can really rip you off when it comes time to turn the car in!

Hey there Dawn Marie! I will actually post an update in just a minute.

MIL and FIL both still work for the dealership but they don't carry the Jeep Liberty I want. Thanks for the heads up on leasing. I am definitely a "read the fine print four times through" kind of gal. This will be a slow, shopping around, comparing deals with other cities kind of process. I appreciate you thinking of us though! Have a good weekend!
